PAKISTAN ARMY DISMISS ALLEGATIONS BY WIKILEAKS

Islamabad - Pakistani army denied whistleblowing website WikiLeaks cable’s allegation, suggesting Pakistan military and the main intelligence officials were aware of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s presence in Abbottabad city. The US military killed bin Laden May 2, 2011, leaving the Pakistan government embarrassed over his presence in the country.

According to a WikiLeaks report, officials of the Pakistan army and spy agency Inter-State Services (ISI) knew about bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad.

Pakistani army’s spokesman Major General Athar Abbas denied the allegations about contacts between Pakistani intelligence officials and bin Laden.

Gen. Abbas rejected what he called the so called “leaks”, saying that they were nothing but a pile of a baseless fabrication.

“These charges are not new. These leaks are actually old wine in new bottle”, he said.

On Monday, WikiLeaks published over five million emails from US-based global security analysis firm Stratfor. The messages were reportedly stolen by hacker group Anonymous.

“Mid to senior level ISI and Pak military, with one retired Pak military General, had knowledge of the OBL (Osama bin laden) arrangements and safe house,” Online news agency quoted Fred Burton, Stratfor vice-president for intelligence, as writing in an email.

The email was reportedly written May 13 to one of the company’s regional directors for South Asia soon after the killing of the Al Qaeda chief.

Sharmeen's ‘Saving Face’ wins first Oscar for Pakistan

LOS ANGELES: Pakistani filmmaker and first-time Oscar nominee Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won an Academy Award on Monday for her documentary about acid attack victims, a first for a Pakistani.
In her acceptance speech, Chinoy dedicated the award to the women of Pakistan. "All the women in Pakistan working for change, don't give up on your dreams, this is for you," she said.

Directed by Daniel Junge and produced by Sharmeen Chinoy, the film follows British plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad, who returns to his homeland to help victims of acid burns.

More than 100 people, mainly women and girls, are disfigured in acid attacks every year in Pakistan, although groups helping survivors say many more cases go unreported.

"The women who decided to be a part of the documentary did so because they wanted to make their voices heard and wanted to bring attention to this form of assault," Chinoy said in an interview conducted before she won the Oscar.

"The main reason that they are in 'Saving Face' is to make their stories heard and have an impact."

Many victims are women attacked by their husbands, and others assaulted for turning down a proposal of marriage. One girl in the documentary describes how she was burned after rejecting the advances of her teacher. She was 13 at the time.

Another woman featured in the film is 25-year-old Rukhsana, whose husband threw acid on her and her sister-in-law doused her in gasoline before her mother-in-law lit a match and set her on fire.

Chinoy said she hopes the cases in her film will resonate for others in Pakistan.

"It is a story of hope with a powerful message for the Pakistani audience. I felt this would be a great way to show how Pakistanis can help other Pakistanis overcome their problems," she said.

Chinoy's films have won international acclaim. Her 2010 documentary, Pakistan's Taliban Generation, won an International Emmy Award.

The documentary competed against "God Is the Bigger Elvis," a Rebecca Cammisa and Julie Anderson film about a mid-century starlet who chose the church over Hollywood; "The Barber of Birmingham," a Gail Dolgin and Robin Fryday film that follows the life of 85-year-old barber James Armstrong and the legacy of the civil rights movement; James Spione's war film "Incident in New Baghdad"; and "The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom," a film by Lucy Walker and Kira Carstensen that follows survivors of Japan's 2011 earthquake and their struggle to recover from the wave that crushed their homes and lives

DG ISI likely to get another Extension?

Islamabad - Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is seriously considering offering extension in service to the ISI DG Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha for his ‘meritorious services’ for the country.
Daily The Nation claimed on Sunday that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) director general, whose second extended term too expires next month, might be given another extension in service because of the ‘critical challenges to the national security’.

They dismissed media reports that Pasha was being appointed as director general of the Strategic Plans Division (SPD)  the body that controls the country’s nuclear arsenal  saying that SPD’s was a highly technical job being looked after well by the incumbent director general Lt-Gen (r) Khalid Ahmad Kidwai.

Pasha, who took over the agency in October 2008  just a month before the Mumbai attacks of 26/11  and has served as the ISI DG for three-and-half years, reached the age of retirement in 2010 and has already been given two extensions. His second one-year extension given last year expires on March 18.
Sources were of the view that Prime Minister Gilani has already shown his inclination in giving extension to Gen Pasha. They said that Gilani was ‘personally impressed’ the way Pasha had devoted himself to defending the country from critical internal and external security challenges since he assumed the office of ISI DG.

Sources said the prime minister has been vocal in supporting Gen Pasha, claiming he (PM) has also taken on board President Asif Ali Zardari on the issue of Pasha’s extension. They were of the view that Gilani believes that certain media outlets had created some misunderstandings related to ISI DG and army chief by overplaying the memogate scam, but those were later removed. The prime minister, they said, was also convinced that some US agencies were actively involved in backing media campaign to malign armed forces and security agencies including the ISI to achieve certain objectives.

In case Prime Minister Gilani changes his mind or Gen Pasha himself refuses to accept extension in his service, army chief would recommend a panel of capable lieutenant generals for the new appointment. “It has always been the prerogative of army chief which names he picks up for this crucial job”, sources said, adding it would be premature to say about the p

PAKISTAN NAVY GETS TWO P3C ORION AIRCRAFT

Thee second batch of two modified P3C aircraft were inducted into Pakistan Navy fleet at Naval Aviation Base in Karachi on Tuesday.

The aircraft modified with latest avionics/sensors are part of the US assistance being provided to Pakistan Navy under FMF (Foreign Military Funding) programme.

Pakistan Navy is to receive a total of six such aircraft from US in batches of two each. The first batch was inducted into Pakistan Navy in 2010.

According to a statement, the aircraft has extended surveillance capability which will help Pakistan Navy maintain requisite vigil in Pakistan’s vital area of interest in North Arabian Sea. The area regarded as an important trade and energy corridor for the global economy, is home to intense maritime activity both legal and illegal and thus warrants continuous guard.
